Gaesil Village, known as the village of the Seonsan Kim clan, has a rich history dating back to the early Joseon period. It was founded by the descendants of Kim Jong-jik, a renowned Korean Neo-Confucian scholar. As you explore the village, be sure to visit the head house of Kim Jong-jik and the old village school, both of which are significant cultural heritage sites. Nearby, the Daegaya Museum displays the writing accessories of Kim Jong-jik, adding to the historical charm of the area.
But Gaesil Village is not just about history. It is also known as Gaehwasil, which means “a beautiful valley with blooming flowers.” Surrounding the village, you’ll find the majestic Mt. Hwagaesan, a 350-year-old bamboo forest, and Jeopmubong Peak, which resembles a fluttering butterfly. Over 80% of the village houses are traditional hanok buildings, creating a cozy environment that will transport you back in time.
Thanks to the efforts of the villagers, Gaesil Village has been transformed into a beautiful community. The hanok were renovated or rebuilt, earthen-stone walls were built, walking paths were created, and landscaping works were carried out. The village now features a village shelter, experience center, Internet café, and other facilities for the convenience of residents and visitors. It’s no wonder that Gaesil Village received the prestigious presidential citation at the Korea Rural Village Awards in 2011.
Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the hands-on experience programs offered by Gaesil Village. Whether it’s planting rice, learning Korean traditional etiquette and tea ceremony, making kites and straw handicrafts, or experiencing traditional food making, there’s something for everyone. You can also try your hand at traditional games, go loach fishing, or enjoy ice sledding, depending on the season.
Every year, Gaesil Village welcomes around 50-60,000 visitors who come to experience the beauty and tranquility of this farm stay village. So come and immerse yourself in the rich culture and natural beauty of Gaesil Village while staying at the comfortable and authentic Ungidaek House. We look forward to welcoming you!
