Welcome to SangYuJae, the oldest traditional Korean style house in Jeongseon, Gangwon-do Province. As a tourist, stepping into SangYuJae feels like stepping back in time to experience the rich culture and history of Korea.

One of the most remarkable features of SangYuJae is the magnificent mulberry tree that stands beside the stone wall. This tree, over 600 years old and 25 meters tall, is not only a marvel to behold but also a symbol of Gangwon-do Province. Its branches spread out gracefully, showcasing the vitality and resilience of nature.

As you enter through the gate, you’ll immediately notice the Sarangchae house in the front yard. This traditional house serves as a welcoming space for guests, while the owners of SangYuJae reside in the Anchae, the main house located beyond. The yard itself is a playground for traditional folk games like Tuho and Jegichagi, providing a glimpse into the recreational activities of our ancestors.

Inside the house, you’ll find a treasure trove of artifacts and relics from the past. Treadmills, wooden rice chests, and large wooden bowls are just a few examples of the items on display, giving you a unique insight into the daily life of our predecessors. Additionally, you can indulge in a cup of coffee or traditional tea at the cafe situated on one side of the yard.

The rooms at SangYuJae are designed in the traditional Ondol style, with clean and modern bathrooms for your convenience. However, you won’t find a television in the room. The owners believe that immersing yourself in the lifestyle of our ancestors, who lived without constant screens and distractions, provides a valuable opportunity for meaningful conversations with fellow travelers.

Located just a 5-minute walk away from Jeongseon Arirang Market, SangYuJae offers easy access to one of the best spectacles in Jeongseon. Indulge in the healthy and delicious local cuisine, such as Gondeurebap, Kotdeungchigi Noodles, Tadpole Noodles, Buckwheat Crepe, and Surichwi Rice Cake. These flavors will delight your taste buds and leave you with a true taste of Jeongseon.

At SangYuJae, you’ll not only find a place to rest and rejuvenate but also an opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant history and culture of Korea. Come and experience the magic of this ancient house and create memories that will last a lifetime.
