Welcome to Ongyejongtaek Sambaekdang, a hanok (traditional Korean house) that has been beautifully restored to offer you a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Korea. Located on the site where Ongye Yihae, the older brother of Toegye Yi Hwang, used to live, this historic house is a symbol of resilience and tradition.
Once the headquarters of the righteous army against the Japanese, Ongyejongtaek Sambaekdang has a fascinating story to tell. Although it was tragically burned down by the Japanese military authority in 1896, it has been lovingly restored with the support of the government and others, finally completed in May 2011.
As you enter the grounds, you’ll be greeted by a magnificent 500-year old chestnut tree, a symbol of the village and a testament to the enduring spirit of the people. Inside the house, you’ll find a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is infused with the spirit of family. From the beautifully crafted wooden tables to the comfortable floor cushions and mother-of-pearl furniture pieces, every detail has been carefully designed to create an authentic and inviting ambiance.
Ongyejongtaek Sambaekdang offers a total of seven rooms, each with its own bathroom or air conditioner, depending on the size. Outside the rooms, you’ll find shared shower facilities, a laundromat, and a communal kitchen and warehouse. If you’re traveling with a group of ten or more, you can even enjoy an outdoor barbecue, but make sure to inquire in advance.
In addition to providing comfortable accommodations, Ongyejongtaek Sambaekdang also offers various cultural programs. You can participate in tea ware pouch making or Hanji craft programs, giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in traditional Korean arts and crafts. Please note that these programs require a reservation and may be subject to a fee.
