Welcome to Huewon (休垣), a charming hanok guesthouse nestled in Seoak-dong, Gyeongju. As the former capital of the Silla Dynasty for over a thousand years, Gyeongju is steeped in rich history and cultural heritage. Situated amidst iconic sites such as the Tomb of King Muyeol, Tomb of King Jinji, and Seoakseowon Confucian Academy, Huewon provides a serene and immersive experience for travelers seeking a glimpse into Korea’s past.
Originally built in the 1970s and later renovated, Huewon has been offering accommodations since 2011. As you enter through the gate, you’ll be greeted by a square-shaped courtyard that exudes a bright and welcoming atmosphere. At the center of the courtyard stands a magnificent magnolia tree, beloved by visitors for its beauty and charm.
The meticulously landscaped garden is adorned with flower trees and bonsai trees, complemented by vintage elements such as an old well and a water pump. Behind the guesthouse, the backdrop of the low-altitude Seondosan Mountain creates a picturesque setting that changes with each season.
Huewon is a hanok house that has been lovingly preserved by its owner, showcasing traditional features such as columns, beams, and rafters that bear the marks of time. The guestrooms are bright, clean, and imbued with a delicate fragrance. While they offer a comforting retreat, it’s worth noting that additional facilities such as a BBQ set are not available. This deliberate choice ensures that guests can enjoy a peaceful and healthy environment.
The host of Huewon has called Gyeongju home for nearly three decades and is passionate about promoting the cultural heritage of the city. They are more than happy to recommend special travel destinations and share fascinating stories about Gyeongju. One highly recommended spot is Dobongseodang Village School, located just behind the guesthouse. If you venture up to the village early in the morning, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Gyeongju blanketed in fog. Another nearby destination worth exploring is Namsan Mountain, affectionately known as the Outdoor Museum due to its numerous Buddhist statues and towers scattered throughout.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, nature lover, or simply seeking a tranquil getaway, Huewon offers a delightful blend of comfort, authenticity, and warm hospitality. Immerse yourself in the cultural treasures of Gyeongju while enjoying the serenity of this charming hanok guesthouse.
