Experience the architectural style of the Joseon Dynasty at the Old House of Ildu in Hamyang, where you can stay in traditional hanok rooms and enjoy a garden party in the large garden next to the house, all while enjoying stunning views of Seokgasan Mountain.

Welcome to the historic Old House of Ildu in Hamyang! As a tourist, you will be transported back in time as you explore the birthplace of Jeong Yeo-chang, a renowned Neo-Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty.

Located at the heart of Gaepyeong Village in Jigok-myeon, Hamyang, this house holds immense historical value, offering a glimpse into the architectural style of the 17th to 18th centuries and the rich history of the Joseon Dynasty. Spanning across an impressive area of 9,917m2, the house is composed of various buildings including servant quarters, reception rooms, gates, and a shrine.

Upon entering the house, you will be immediately struck by the meticulously designed sarangchae, a detached building that serves as a reception room for male guests. Unlike other traditional hanok houses of its time, the sarangchae here boasts an expanded layout, featuring an upper floor library, showcasing Jeong’s scholarly spirit. As you continue your exploration, you will come across the anchae, the secluded women’s quarters, adorned with a courtyard and traditional rooms.

The Old House of Ildu now offers a unique accommodation experience, allowing you to stay in this historic setting. With a range of rooms available, including those in the servant quarters and the sarangchae, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the ambiance and charm of this ancient house. While the house preserves its antique furnishings and interior items, modern amenities such as toilets and bathrooms have been added for your convenience.

Designated as National Folklore Cultural Heritage No. 186, the Old House of Ildu is carefully maintained by the local administrative office. You may even have the chance to meet Jeong Ui-gyun, an 18th-generation descendant of Jeong Yeo-chang, as he frequently visits the house from his own residence in the nearby orchard. If you’re in the mood for a garden party or wish to try your hand at cooking, Jeong graciously allows guests to utilize his spacious garden next to the detached building.
