Once owned by Lee Man-hyeon, famously known as Chiam, the 11th-generation descendant of the esteemed Korean Confucian scholar Yi Hwang, this historic house is a testament to the grandeur of the Joseon Dynasty. Originally located in Wonchon-ri, Dosan-myeon, the house was relocated to its current location in 1976 after a devastating flood. Today, it stands as a symbol of resilience and preservation.

As you step into Chiam Old House, you will be greeted by its remarkable architecture comprising of 22 rooms, 5 gates, and 1 detached building. The main building, standing tall and majestic, offers a glimpse into the opulence enjoyed by the high-ranking government officials of the era. The detached building, with its unique combination of gable and gambrel roofs, showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the time.

Designated as Gyeongsangbuk-do Folklore Material No. 11, Chiam Old House has been thoughtfully transformed into a guesthouse, allowing visitors to indulge in an authentic experience of traditional Korean living. Three rooms, namely “Seongmyeongjae,” “Gyeongeopjae,” and “Nakseongdang,” are available for guests seeking a glimpse into the past.

“Seongmyeongjae,” meaning “honesty and integrity” in Korean, offers the quintessential experience of sleeping on an “ondol” floor, a traditional Korean heating system. For those seeking a more modern comfort, the spacious and well-equipped “Bakkatchae” room, also known as the outer building, provides a kitchen, TV, air conditioning, and a private bathroom.

“Gyeongeopjae,” the most popular room among guests, embodies the values of unselfishness and reverence. Nestled next to the gate, rooms such as “Ilgeonjae,” “Seokcheonjae,” and “Hakgujae” offer a perfect blend of convenience and a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape and the old house itself.

Venture towards the east side of the main building, and you will discover “Jamnyongdang,” named after the enchanting small pond in the yard. Translating to “to strive to be a man of virtue like the dragon flying in the sky,” this area boasts a mesmerizing array of flowers, seamlessly blending nature’s beauty with the historical charm of the house.
