Baek il heon Head House was bestowed upon General Yi Sam by King Yeongjo as a token of appreciation for his remarkable achievement in suppressing the Yi In-jwa Rebellion in 1728. In honor of his accomplishments, King Yeongjo also granted Yi Sam the posthumous name ‘Baegilheon’, which translates to “a man of great valor.”

The layout of Baek il heon Head House is a sight to behold. It consists of three main areas: the munganchae, which is the gate quarters located next to a tall gate, the anchae, or women’s quarters, shaped like the Korean alphabet ‘ㄷ’, and the sarangchae, or men’s quarters, shaped like the Korean alphabet ‘ㄱ’. These structures are arranged in a square layout, creating a harmonious and balanced atmosphere.

Accommodations at Baek il heon Head House include the munganchae, the araet sarang with a numaru (upper floor), and the wit sarang and the geonneotbang, each featuring a large toenmaru, a narrow wooden porch that offers stunning views of the surroundings. One particularly noteworthy feature is the geonneotbang, which served as the living space for the eldest son of the family and his wife for generations. It boasts a cozy courtyard surrounded by a traditional mud wall, creating a tranquil and intimate atmosphere.
