The name “3917 Majung” holds a deeper meaning. It symbolizes the desire to revive and embrace the modern culture of Naju, which began in 1939, and bring it into the present day. This commitment to preserving and celebrating the region’s heritage is evident throughout the entire complex.
Set on a sprawling land area of 13,223 m2, 3917 Majung comprises four distinct buildings: Nanpajeong, Sarangchae, Mokseowon, and Siseoheon. Each building showcases a unique architectural fusion of Japanese and Western influences, reminiscent of the late Korean Empire period.
Let’s start with Nanpajeong, a pavilion with a significant historical background. Built during the mid-Joseon period, it was named after Jeong Seok-jin, also known as Nanpa, a renowned scholar who led an uprising against Japanese imperialism. This building offers two ondol rooms, featuring the traditional under-the-floor heating system. The central wooden-floor hall, known as daecheong, connects these cozy rooms, providing a communal space for relaxation. The restroom, complete with a shower booth, is conveniently located outside the building.
Moving on to Sarangchae, you’ll discover Eunhaengmok Room 1 and 2. These tatami rooms come with a balcony, offering a peaceful retreat and a glimpse of the surrounding beauty. Sarangchae also houses its own shower and restroom facilities, ensuring your comfort and convenience.
Mokseowon, characterized by its open floor plan and attic, consists of three tatami rooms. This layout allows for a versatile space where you can relax and engage with fellow travelers. Like Nanpajeong, the shower and restroom facilities are situated outside the building.
Lastly, Siseoheon boasts a 4-person room and the largest room in the complex, capable of accommodating more than 10 guests. It’s an excellent choice for group events, with two restrooms and two restrooms equipped with shower facilities. Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, Siseoheon offers ample space for everyone to enjoy.
