Enjoy Camping at Hwangmaesan National Leisure Campground: The Highest Drive-Up Campsite

Hwangmaesan National Leisure Campground

Hwangmaesan Campground

The Hwangmaesan National Leisure Campground, known in Korean as 황매산 국민여가 캠핑장, is a pleasure to behold. Situated at an altitude of 850 meters, it holds the record for being the highest campsite accessible by car. The site offers an unparalleled experience of pristine blue skies, fresh air, and expansive nature. Whether it’s the vibrant red azaleas in spring or the shimmering silver reeds in autumn, this campground is indisputably one of the most beautiful in South Korea.

Overview

The Hwangmaesan Campground features seven distinct sites, each with its unique advantages, allowing campers to choose a spot that suits their style best. Most of the sites are covered with grass blocks. Options include a cozy forest site, a deck site nestled under the autumn leaves, and a treehouse that children will absolutely adore.

However, each May, the campground prohibits the entry of motorhomes, caravans, and folding trailers due to potential traffic congestion related to the Azalea Festival. Only regular campers are allowed during this time.

Attractions and Activities

In terms of nearby attractions, campers can visit the Hapcheon Image Theme Park, a popular filming location for numerous movies and dramas such as “Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War”, “Wind Fighter”, “Jeon Woo-chi”, and “Gaksital”. Other notable sites include the Haeinsa Temple, which was founded during the Silla Dynasty and houses a thousand years of history, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Haeinsa Janggyeong Panjeon (the Depositories for the Tripitaka Koreana Woodblocks). The Eight Scenic Spots of Hapcheon, such as Mt. Gaya, Haeinsa, Hongnyudong Valley, Namsan Jeilbong, Hambukru, Baekri Cherry Blossom Road, Hapcheon Lake, Hwanggye Falls, and Mosanjae, are also worth checking out.
