The Petroglyphs of Cheonjeon-ri date back to as early as the late Paleolithic Era, with most of the paintings originating from the New Stone Age, Neolithic Era, and Bronze Age. The upper part of the rock showcases intricate carvings of animals, including deer, which were believed to represent abundance during the New Stone Age and Bronze Age. On the lower part of the rock, you’ll find writings and drawings of humans and animals created by penciling. These lower drawings, such as cavalcades, sailing boats, dragons, horses, and deer, along with approximately 300 writings, were made during the unified Silla period, signifying the area’s significance as a holy ground.
How to Get There
To embark on your journey to Cheonjeon-ri, you can start by taking a bus from Seoul. From Seoul Express Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, hop on an express bus or intercity bus bound for Ulsan Bus Terminal. Once you arrive at Ulsan Bus Terminal, head towards Lotte Hotel – Ulsan and find Bus No. 1713 on the opposite side of the hotel at Intercity Bus Terminal Bus Stop. Take this bus and alight at Eonyang Bus Stop. From there, take a right at the first four-way intersection and catch Bus No. 348 at Eonyang Bus Stop. After a scenic journey, get off at Daegok Museum Bus Stop. From the bus stop, follow the Daegokcheon Stream for approximately 1.2 kilometers, passing Jangcheongyo Bridge, until you reach the Petroglyphs of Cheonjeon-ri.
