A Place with a Rich and Complex History
Saenamteo, also known by the names “Nodeul” and “Sanamgi,” has a multifaceted past that dates back to the early Joseon period. Initially, it served as a military training ground, but over time, it became the site of tragic events. It is here that convicted felons and the Sayuksin, the six martyred ministers, were executed. During various periods of persecution, such as the Sinyu Persecution of 1801, the Gihae Persecution of 1839, the Byeongo Persecution of 1846, and the Byeongin Persecution of 1866, countless Catholics met their untimely end on this very ground.
A Sanctuary for the Faithful
Not only is Saenamteo a place of historical significance, but it is also a sanctuary for the faithful. The site houses an altar where the remains of nine Catholic saints are enshrined. Among these saints are 11 priests, including the first Korean priest, Kim Taegon (Andrew), the first Chinese priest to arrive in Korea, Ju Mun Mo (Jacobus), and the first French priest to come to Korea, Bishop Imbert. Additionally, the remains of other devout Catholics, such as Hyeon Seok-mun, are also enshrined here.
How to Get There
To reach Saenamteo Catholic Holy Place of the Martyrs, take the subway to Yongsan Station (Seoul Subway Line & Jungang Line), and head out of Exit 1. Once you’re outside the station, turn right and walk approximately 63 meters. At the first corner, turn right again, walking in the direction of Dragon Hill Spa & Sauna, until you reach the end of the street. From there, turn left and continue walking for about 650 meters. At the corner where Bingchang Rainwater Pumping station is located, make a right turn. Keep walking for another 188 meters, passing the train tracks, and you will find the building on your left-hand side.
