Explore the Mysterious History of Seoul Seokchon-dong Ancient Tombs
Welcome to Seoul Seokchon-dong Ancient Tombs, a historic destination that will take you on a journey through the ancient dynasties of South Korea. Located in the vibrant Jamsil district, these tombs were discovered during a city development project. Although the severity of destruction makes it difficult to determine the full scale of the tombs, the largest tomb, known as the third tomb, gives us a glimpse into the past.
- Size and Structure: The third tomb measures an impressive 49.6 meters from east to west, 43.7 meters from south to north, and stands at a height of 4 meters. It features three layers of stones topped by a smooth mound, following the tomb style originated from the Goguryeo dynasty (37 BC-AD 668).
- Belonging to the Baekje Dynasty: These ancient tombs are believed to belong to one of the earliest leaders of the Baekje dynasty (18 BC-AD 660). The Baekje dynasty was founded by the people of Goguryeo who migrated southwards and established a new kingdom around the Hangang River basin.
The square-shaped fourth tomb, which shares a similar structure with the third tomb, is also of great archaeological significance. Excavations of the area have unearthed numerous pieces of earthenware from the early Baekje era, giving us valuable insights into the culture and customs of this golden age. Additionally, a gold spangle earring was discovered, adding to the intrigue and historical value of the site.
Designated as Historic Site No. 243, the third and fourth tombs provide us with a window into the relations between the three ancient kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla during the 4th century. Getting There
If you’re planning to visit Seoul Seokchon-dong Ancient Tombs, the most convenient way to reach the site is by subway. Simply take Seoul Subway Line 9 and get off at Seokchon Station. From there, head out through Exit 7 and enjoy a pleasant walk of approximately 700 meters to reach the tomb site. Don’t forget to bring comfortable walking shoes and a sense of adventure!
