Bongwonsa Temple was founded in 889 during the reign of Shilla Queen Jinseong by Monk Doseon. Originally named Banyasa Temple, it was established on the grounds of Yeonhui Palace, which is now Yonsei University. Unfortunately, the temple suffered destruction during the Imjin War in 1592. However, in 1748, during the reign of Joseon King Yeongjo, Bongwonsa Temple was rebuilt by two Buddhist monks, Chanjeup and Jeungam, and it was given its current name.
