A Devastating Fire and Japanese Occupation
While Gyeonghuigung Palace boasted numerous halls and structures, tragedy struck in 1829 when a destructive fire consumed most of the buildings. Despite the devastating loss, the palace was not abandoned. However, with the onset of the Japanese occupation, the remaining structures were torn down, and the palace grounds were transformed into Gyeongseong Middle School, which is now Seoul High School.
From School to Park: A New Beginning
In 1987, Seoul High School moved to the Gangnam area, leaving behind a significant historical site. Recognizing the importance of preserving this heritage, the previous school location was transformed into a park. Today, the palace grounds house the Seoul Museum of Art, picturesque walking paths, and meticulously restored structures such as Heunghwamun Gate and Sungjeongjeon Hall, completed in November 1994.
