Step back in time to the Unified Silla Period, specifically in AD 828 during the 3rd year of King Heungdeok’s reign, when Cheoneunsa Temple was first built. It is said that Monk Deokun and Monk Seru from India were responsible for its construction. The temple was originally known as Gamrosa, meaning Sweet Dew Temple, due to its proximity to a spring with crystal-clear and refreshing water, believed to cleanse both the body and soul.
During the reign of King Chungryeol, Cheoneunsa Temple was recognized as the Best Temple in the southern region, further solidifying its significance in the history of Korean Buddhism.
A Tale of Destruction and Rebirth
Like many historical sites, Cheoneunsa Temple faced its share of challenges. During the Imjin War (1592-1598), the temple was tragically burned down. However, the temple was not lost forever. It was rebuilt and given its current name, Cheoneunsa, which means Disappearance of Spring Water.
A fascinating legend surrounds the renaming of the temple. It is said that during the reconstruction, a large serpent emerged from the spring. After the serpent was captured and killed, the spring water suddenly ceased to flow. This extraordinary event led to the temple being named Cheoneunsa, immortalizing this unique occurrence.
