Discover the Historic Beauty of Muju Anguksa Temple

Welcome to Muju Anguksa Temple, a historic and serene destination nestled in the breathtaking Jeoksangsan Mountain. As the only temple in this mountain range, Anguksa Temple holds a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1227 by Monk Wolin. In addition to its fascinating past, this temple is also known for housing secret historical archives and offering stunning views of the surrounding natural beauty.

A Glimpse into the Past

The history of Anguksa Temple is truly captivating. In 1614, during the 6th year of King Gwanghaegun’s reign, a secret historical archives called Sagak was constructed within the mountain. This archive served as a storage space for the valuable Joseonwangjo Sillok, the annals of the Joseon dynasty. Then, in 1641, during the 19th year of King Injo’s reign, Seonukgak was built to store Seonwonrok, the royal genealogical records. These two sites were designated as Jeoksangsan Historical Archives during the Joseon dynasty, highlighting their significance.

To ensure the safety of these archives, Hoguksa Temple was also built at that time. It served as a protective measure against any accidents that could potentially harm the historical documents. Additionally, both Anguksa Temple and Hoguksa Temple were used as residences for monk soldiers who were responsible for safeguarding the archives. The temple complex we see today is a reconstruction of the original Anguksa Temple, which was relocated to the Hoguksa Temple site in 1995 due to the construction of Muju Power Plant.
