Discover the Historic Twin Tombs of Iksan Ssangneung

Unearthed History
The Ssangneung Twin Tombs were accidentally discovered in 1917 during an academic excavation survey. It was soon realized that these tombs had been illegally excavated before, possibly during the reign of King Chungsukwang in the Goryeo dynasty. Although the tombs had been stripped of their burial accessories by looters, the wooden coffins inside remained remarkably intact.
A Tale of Restoration
Over the years, the coffins suffered damage, particularly during the Korean War. However, the Jeonju National Museum undertook a commendable restoration project, bringing back the former glory of these ancient tombs. Originally measuring 3.1 meters high and 0.5 kilometers wide, the larger restored tomb now stands at an impressive 30 meters in diameter and 5 meters in height. The smaller tomb, on the other hand, measures 24 meters in diameter and 3.5 meters in height. In recognition of their historical significance, the Twin Tombs were designated as Historic Site No. 87 on January 21, 1963.
The Royal Connection
The Twin Tombs are located approximately 200 meters apart. The tomb in the east is known as Daewangmyo, which means the “big royal tomb,” while the one in the west is called Sowangmyo, meaning the “small royal tomb.” Inside the tombs, you’ll find the same architectural style as the stone chamber tombs discovered in the nearby tomb cluster of Neungsan-ri, Buyeo. It is highly believed that these tombs belong to King Mu and his wife, Queen Seonhwa, considering the historical context and the proximity to the Mireuksaji Temple Site, which was built during King Mu’s reign in the Baekje dynasty.
How to Get There
If you’re traveling from Seoul, head to the Seoul Express Bus Terminal and catch an intercity bus to Iksan Bus Terminal. From there, you can hop on Bus No. 61, 65, 222-1, or 555 and alight at the Ssangneung Bus Stop. Once you disembark, take a left turn and walk approximately 800 meters towards the magnificent Iksan Ssangneung Royal Tomb.
