The History of Chokseongnu Pavilion
Chokseongnu Pavilion, also known as ‘Jangwollu’ in its earlier days, is a historic gem that has stood proudly for centuries. Its establishment dates back to the 28th year of King Gojong in 1241 during the Goryeo dynasty. This magnificent multi-storied structure without walls has played a significant role in the region’s history, serving as a commanding post for defending Jinju Palace during times of war and as a venue for state examinations during peaceful times.
Unfortunately, Chokseongnu Pavilion suffered damage during the Korean War and was burnt down. However, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Jinju Historical Site Preservation Society, it was restored to its former glory in 1960. The restoration project took great care to maintain the pavilion’s original charm and architectural features.
The Architecture and Design
Chokseongnu Pavilion is a true masterpiece in terms of both design and craftsmanship. Its roof design is a beautiful blend of hipped and gabled styles, creating an elegant and harmonious look. The stone pillars that support the structure were meticulously constructed using rocks sourced from Chokseoksan Mountain, located in Changwon-si. The wood used for the pavilion was carefully selected from Odaesan Mountain, which is situated in Gangwon-do.
Aside from its impressive architecture, Chokseongnu Pavilion boasts several notable features. Visitors will be captivated by the four engraved signboards adorning the pavilion, each displaying intricate calligraphy. Additionally, a board displays the works of renowned poets and calligraphers, adding an artistic touch to the pavilion’s ambiance.
Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival
If you have the opportunity to visit Chokseongnu Pavilion in the fall, you’ll be greeted with an extra treat. Every year, the Jinju Namgang Yudeung (Lantern) Festival takes place at the nearby Jinjuseong Fortress. The festival is a celebration of light and culture, featuring thousands of beautifully illuminated lanterns floating along the Namgang River. The sight is nothing short of breathtaking and provides a magical backdrop for exploring Chokseongnu Pavilion.
