Exploring Ancient Tombs in Daeseong-dong, Gimhae: A Glimpse into the Gaya Kingdom

Unearthing the Secrets
Excavated by researchers from the Kyungsung University Museum between 1990 and 1992, the Daeseong-dong Tumuli represent the common burial ground of the ruling elite during the Gaya Kingdom. As you explore this historic site, you will notice the strategic placement of the tombs. The hilltops served as the final resting place for kings and rulers, while the slopes house the tombs of the lower classes.
In total, 136 tumuli were discovered in the Daeseong-dong area. These tumuli have unveiled a plethora of intriguing facts about the Gaya Kingdom. One notable revelation is the burial practice of sacrificing men and horses, which dates back to the end of the third century. Additionally, artifacts such as bent weapons have been found, symbolizing the burial of not just individuals but also their possessions. Among the excavated treasures, you will also come across cylindrical bronze items, pinwheel-shaped bronze items, and jasper items, indicating the Gaya Kingdom’s involvement in trade with Japan. The Daeseong-dong Tumuli offer a unique insight into the political, social, and cultural exchanges of the Gaya Kingdom with neighboring Korea, China, and Japan.
