Welcome to Buseoksa Temple, a historic treasure nestled in the serene mountains of South Korea. As you step foot into this UNESCO World Heritage site, you will be transported back to the year 676, during the reign of King Munmu of the Silla Kingdom. This temple holds a significant place in Korean history, being founded by the revered Great Monk Uisang upon orders from the king. Its purpose? To pray for the protection of the country.

A Floating Stone and a Temple’s Transformation

Buseoksa Temple derives its name from a remarkable stone located to the west of Buljeon Hall. This stone appears to be floating rather than supported by the ground beneath it, a fascinating sight that adds to the temple’s mystique. In the past, it was also known as Seondalsa Temple or Heunggyosa Temple during the Goryeo dynasty. In 1916, during excavation work, records of the temple’s repair were discovered, revealing the rebuilding efforts during the early part of the Goryeo dynasty.
