A Tale of Legends and Myths

Gyerim Forest holds a significant place in the folklore surrounding the birth of Alji, the founder of the esteemed Gyeongju Kim clan. Legend has it that King Talhae heard the cries of a rooster emanating from deep within the Sirim Woods. Intrigued, Chancellor Hogong was dispatched to investigate the source of this mysterious sound. To his astonishment, Hogong discovered a rooster perched beneath a tree, upon which hung a golden box. Reporting his remarkable find to the king, Hogong was commanded to bring the golden box back to the palace. To their surprise, upon opening the box, they found a small child inside – Kim Alji. From that moment on, the forest, previously known as ‘Sirim’ or ‘Gurim’, was renamed ‘Gyerim’, signifying the significance of the rooster (‘gye’ in Korean). The name Gyerim was also used to refer to the ancient Silla kingdom, adding another layer of historical depth to this extraordinary place.

A Place of Royal Heritage

Although Alji was adopted as the king’s son, he never ascended to the throne due to the crown being passed on to King Pasa of the Park family. However, with the coronation of King Naemul, the Kim clan eventually rose to become the royal bloodline of Silla. The birth of Kim Alji is commemorated by a memorial stone, which was erected during the Joseon dynasty in the third year of King Sunjo’s reign. This remarkable stone is located in close proximity to the royal fortress of Silla, serving as a testament to the deep reverence held for Gyerim Forest as the mystical birthplace of the first ancestor of the royal Kim clan.
