In order to protect the small neighborhood of Jirye-ri, Imdong-myeon from the risk of flooding, the village leader, Kim Won-gil, made the courageous decision to relocate and rebuild ten houses in 1986. This newly established neighborhood, now known as Jirye Arts Village, was officially designated as an art village in 1990. Since then, it has flourished as a thriving community of artists and artisans.
