Ancient Roots and Relocation
Originally known as Pungakseodang School, Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy has a storied past dating back to the Goryeo dynasty. It served as an educational institution for the Sarim Party, a prominent political party at the time. In 1572, the academy was relocated to its present location in Byeongsan by Yu Seong-nyong, a revered Confucian scholar known by his pen name Seoae.
A Tribute to a Scholar
When Yu Seong-nyong passed away in 1607, his followers and other renowned scholars built Jondeoksa Shrine in 1613 to enshrine his ancestral tablet. To honor his memory, the academy was renamed Byeongsanseowon in 1614. Later, Yu Seong-nyong’s ancestral tablet was moved to Yeogangseowon, where it joined the ancestral tablet of another esteemed Confucian scholar, Toegye Yi Hwang. In 1629, a new ancestral tablet was created and housed in Jondeoksa Shrine.
Recognition and Preservation Efforts
In 1863, Byeongsanseowon received recognition from the king as a private Confucian academy, solidifying its importance in Korean history. Over the years, this remarkable institution has undergone several reconstructions and preservation efforts. The lecture hall was reconstructed in 1921, followed by the shrine in 1937, during the Japanese occupation, showcasing the dedication to preserving this significant cultural site. Today, Byeongsanseowon is designated as Historic Site No. 260 and houses a collection of 1,000 documents and 3,000 books, including works by Yu Seong-nyong.
