Uncovering the Tale of King Danjong
In the 15th century, King Danjong faced a tragic fate when his throne was usurped by his uncle, Suyang Daegun. Exiled to Yeongwol County, Danjong met an unfortunate end, his remains abandoned in the Donggang River. It wasn’t until the courageous Eom Heung-do, the governor of Yeongwol Lake, took it upon himself to find the king’s body and lay him to rest in what we now know as Jangneung Royal Tomb.
Initially stripped of his title, King Danjong was posthumously honored and restored to his rightful place during the reign of King Sukjong in 1698. Today, Jangneung stands as a testament to his legacy and the resilience of the Joseon dynasty.

How to Get to Jangneung Royal Tomb
If you’re traveling from Seoul, begin your journey by heading to the Seoul Express Bus Terminal. From there, take a bus to Yeongwol Bus Terminal. Once you arrive at Yeongwol, simply board a city bus that travels in the direction of Jojeolli. After approximately 15 minutes, you’ll reach your destination – Jangneung Bus Stop.
