A Brief Overview of the Battle
During the Korean War, the terrain in the Gachilbong area posed numerous challenges for military operations. The North Korean military took advantage of these natural features to build a strong defense position and launch counterattacks, while the South Korean soldiers found themselves in a disadvantageous position in the lowland. The 5th Division Commander Brigadier General Min Gi-sik and 24th Regiment Commander Colonel Yu Ui-jun led the South Korean soldiers, while the North Korean side was defended by the 7th, 14th, and 32nd Regiments of the 27th Division and the 23rd Regiment of the 12th Division under the 2nd Corps.
After conducting a thorough reconnaissance of the area on August 30, the South Korean military advanced to counterattack. After two days of defending their position, the South Korean soldiers successfully broke the North Korean resistance and secured strongly fortified positions. South Korea launched an all-out attack and captured Hill 1241, but faced subsequent counterattacks from North Korea. Despite heavy casualties on both sides, South Korea eventually reclaimed Gachilbong and the surrounding areas, ultimately gaining possession of Haean Basin.

If you’re traveling from Seoul, you can take a convenient bus and taxi combination to reach Gachilbong Battlefield. Start by heading to Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, and from there, take an intercity bus to Yanggu Intercity Bus Terminal. Once you arrive at the Yanggu terminal, you can easily hail a taxi for a scenic 45-minute drive to Gachilbong Battlefield.
