Welcome to Sinheungsa Temple: A Place of History and Tranquility

Located in the eastern part of the Taebaek Mountain Range, Sinheungsa Temple is a historic and culturally significant destination in South Korea. As you step into this serene temple, you will be transported back in time to the reign of Queen Jindeok of the Silla dynasty, when the temple was first established under the name of Hyangseongsa Temple by the esteemed Buddhist monk, Jajang.

The temple has a fascinating history, marked by destruction and rebirth. After enduring multiple fires, it was eventually rebuilt at its present location during the reign of King Injo of the Joseon dynasty. Legend has it that the temple’s relocation was guided by a divine intervention. Monks Yeongseo, Hyewon, and Yeonok all dreamt of a white-haired heavenly man who showed them the exact spot where the temple should be reconstructed. This divine blessing led to the renaming of the temple as “Sinheungsa,” meaning “the temple was blessed by God and became prosperous.”
