Welcome to Buyeo, a city steeped in ancient history and rich cultural heritage. If you’re a history enthusiast, there’s no better place to immerse yourself in the fascinating past than the Buyeo Naseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Let’s embark on a journey to discover the secrets of this historic tourist destination.
A Glimpse into the Past
Buyeo Naseong, also known as the Outer City Wall, was erected to safeguard the capital of Baekje, Sabi. With a remarkable x_height of around 8.4 kilometers, the wall encircled the Busosanseong Fortress and extended all the way to the city of Buyeo. Its construction dates back to approximately 538, a time when the Baekje capital shifted from Woonjin (present-day Gongju) to Sabi (current Buyeo).
The fortress wall, starting from the site of Dongmun (East gate) and stretching to the Geumgang River area, was constructed by piling up soil. While the passage of time has eroded much of its former grandeur, you can still trace its path, including a 20-meter area to the east of Cheongsanseong Fortress, Dongmun Bridge from Seokmok-ri, and an area from Pilseobong Peak to Yeomchang-ri.
The Fortress Structure
Buyeo Naseong Fortress boasts an intriguing architectural design. The outer wall features steep slopes, serving as a formidable defense structure. On the other hand, the inner wall was constructed with a gentle slope, making it easier for horses to ascend and for guards to reach the top. Once inside the fortress, you’ll find remnants of Baekje’s glory – the palace, government offices, houses, temples, stores, and other protected facilities. The entire fortress is strategically positioned, with the Geumgang River providing a natural double-defense system on the south and west sides.
Outer Defense Facilities
Buyeo Naseong Fortress played a crucial role in the outer defense system of Baekje. Along with Cheongsanseong and Cheongmasanseong Fortresses, it formed an important line of defense against potential invasions. These fortresses were not only military installations but also served as the centers of governance, culture, and trade.
