Perched atop the majestic Geumjeongsan Mountain in Busan, this fortress offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a breathtaking adventure, Geumjeongsanseong Fortress has something to offer for everyone.
Step Back in Time
Geumjeongsanseong Fortress, originally known as Dongnae Mountain Fortress, dates back to the Three Kingdoms Era. While the exact time of its initial construction remains unknown, its strategic location and immense size indicate its significance in defending the region. With a length of 17,377 meters and a height of 1.5 to 3 meters, it was the largest fortress in Korea.
Over the centuries, the fortress underwent renovations and repairs. The present structure we see today was built in 1703 during the reign of King Sukjong. It served as a defensive stronghold following the devastating Imjin War (1592-1598), ensuring the safety and protection of the kingdom. Despite suffering severe damage during the Japanese Colonization, efforts have been made to restore and preserve its historical significance.
