The Gyo-dong Ancient Tombs
The Gyo-dong Ancient Tombs are a collection of dozens of ancient tombs that were once gathered around a magnificent royal tomb. While only eight tombs with damaged mounds remain today, these tombs still exude an air of grandeur and mystery. Some of the tombs were excavated by the Japanese in the early 20th century, and unfortunately, most of the relics were moved to Japan. According to the findings of the excavation, the large tombs were constructed in either a passageway form or an entry gate form. It is believed that these tombs contained a wealth of treasures, including jewelry made of various precious metals such as gold crowns, pure gold transplants, and copper. Additionally, iron armor and earthenware were also unearthed, providing further insights into the daily lives and customs of the ancient inhabitants. While the exact structure and comprehensive details of the Gyo-dong Ancient Tombs are not fully known, ongoing restoration efforts have ensured that twenty-one of the existing tombs have been restored, with one tomb featuring an accessible entrance.
The Songhyeon-dong Ancient Tombs
Located under the Mokmasanseong Fortress at the west foot of Hwawangsan Mountain, the Songhyeon-dong Ancient Tombs present a fascinating contrast to the Gyo-dong tombs. Divided into two areas, these tombs were once numerous, but today only a fraction of them remain. Area 1 used to house around 80 tombs, but now only about 16 tombs are visible. The second area, near the stone Buddha in Songhyeon-dong, also had around 20 tombs, but most of them have since transformed into rice paddies, leaving only a few tombs that retain their original appearance.
Similar to the Gyo-dong tombs, the structure and nature of the relics in the Songhyeon-dong tombs are believed to be quite similar. During the Japanese excavation in 1918, a significant number of relics were discovered. However, the current whereabouts of some of these relics remain unknown, adding an air of mystery to this ancient burial site.
