A Village with a Fascinating Story
YeongYang Doodle Village traces its roots back to 1640, when Lee Sim-yeong, known by his pen name Seokgye, built this village as a refuge during the second Manchu invasion of Korea. Since then, his descendants, the Lee family, have lived here and diligently contributed to the development of the village. The village is also known by other names such as Wondoodle or Wonri, derived from the last syllable of Gwangjewon, the national hospital established nearby during the Joseon dynasty in 1899.
Cultural Treasures and Architectural Marvels
As you explore YeongYang Doodle Village, you will encounter numerous cultural treasures and architectural marvels. The village master, Seokgye, resided in his own traditional Hanok house known as Seokgye Gotaek, which stands as a testament to the history and elegance of Korean architecture. Another notable landmark is the Seokgye Seodang, a private learning institute where Seokgye imparted his wisdom to students.
This village is also home to several other cultural gems, including 30 traditional houses that have witnessed the passing of time. One particularly fascinating artifact is the memorial stone for Madam Jang’s first cookbook, written in Hangeul, the Korean alphabet. Additionally, the village boasts the Gwangsan Literature Laboratory, established by the renowned writer Lee Mun-yeol, offering insights into the realm of Korean literature.
