Discover the Enigmatic Geumgwanchong Tomb
Welcome to Geumgwanchong Tomb, a remarkable historic site nestled in the heart of Noseo-dong, Gyeongju. This tomb, dating back to the Silla Kingdom (BC 57∼AD 935), is one of the three tombs that make up the iconic Noseo-dong Tombs in downtown Gyeongju. A Glimpse into Silla Kingdom’s Past
Geumgwanchong Tomb is believed to be the final resting place of a king before or after the reign of King Ji-Jeung during the early 6th century. Although the exact identity of the tomb’s occupant remains a mystery, the artifacts discovered within its sacred grounds provide invaluable insight into the rich history of the Silla Kingdom.
Unearthing Ancient Treasures
In September 1921, a monumental discovery took place when a civilian accidentally stumbled upon the tomb while levelling the ground. The very first relic uncovered was a captivating gold crown, known as “geumgwan” in Korean, which eventually lent its name to this extraordinary burial site. As excavations continued, an astonishing array of treasures emerged, including gold belts, earrings, bracelets, saddlers, and crockery from the Three Kingdoms Era. The tomb yielded an abundance of relics, with over 30,000 beaded artifacts alone.
Preserving History at Gyeongju National Museum
While the original structure of Geumgwanchong stood at an impressive height of 13 meters with a diameter of 50 meters, the relics discovered within its walls have since been relocated to the renowned Gyeongju National Museum. Here, these precious artifacts are carefully preserved, allowing visitors to marvel at the intricate craftsmanship of ancient civilizations and gain a deeper understanding of Korea’s cultural heritage.
Getting to Geumgwanchong Tomb
If you’re arriving by bus, simply head towards the City Hall from Gyeongju Bus Terminal and walk for approximately 300 meters. Cross the road at Seorabeol Negeori and continue for another 350 meters. Take a left turn at Naenam Negeori and after a short 40-meter stroll, you’ll find Geumgwanchong Tomb on your left-hand side.
Alternatively, if you’re arriving by train at Gyeongju Station, cross the road and walk 100 meters. Catch Bus No. 332 and alight at Cheongmachong Rear Gate Bus Stop. Proceed forward for 140 meters and then make a right turn at Naenam Negeori. After a brief 40-meter walk, you’ll reach Geumgwanchong Tomb, awaiting your exploration.
