Introduction
Welcome to Haemi Martyrdom Holy Ground, a historic tourist destination that holds great significance in South Korea’s religious and cultural history. This solemn site serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by nearly 1,000 Catholics who were buried alive between 1866 and 1882 during the period known as the Byeongin Persecution. As you explore this holy ground, you will discover the stories of these nameless martyrs and pay tribute to their unwavering faith.
A Place of Martyrdom
During the Byeongin Persecution, Catholics faced severe persecution, and the site of Haemi Martyrdom Holy Ground became a tragic witness to their suffering. Unable to execute each individual martyr, they were instead buried alive together in a massive hole near Haemieupseong Fortress’ Seomun Gate. Even in the face of such a horrifying fate, the martyrs remained steadfast in their devotion, praying and singing the hymn ‘Yesumaria’ (Jesus Maria) as they met their untimely end. This poignant place was also known as ‘Yeosutgol’, a name derived from the similar sounding “Yeosumeori”.
A Monument of Remembrance
The Haemi Martyrdom Holy Ground stands as a testament to the bravery and dedication of these fallen martyrs. A striking 16-meter-high memorial tower has been erected near the tranquil Haemicheon Stream, serving as a solemn tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for their beliefs. This memorial invites visitors from around the world to reflect on the profound impact of religious persecution and to honor the memory of the nameless martyrs who rest here. It is a place of deep significance for the Catholic community in South Korea.
