Exploring the Historic Tomb of Sin Sung-gyeom

This site holds great cultural and historical importance, as it commemorates the life and contributions of Sin Sung-gyeom, a founding contributor of the Goryeo Dynasty. Known as Jangjeolgong, Sin played a pivotal role in the establishment of Goryeo and his story is truly captivating.
A Heroic Tale of Sacrifice
Sin Sung-gyeom’s immense dedication to the foundation of Goryeo is legendary. In 918, he joined forces with Bae Hyeon-gyeong, Hong Yu, and Bok Ji-gyeom to expel Gung Ye and crown Wang Geon, later known as King Taejo. During the Palgongsan Battle in Daegu, Taejo found himself surrounded by the army of Gyeon Hwon, the founder of Later Baekje. To protect the king, Sin exchanged armor with Taejo, sacrificing his own life. Mistaken for the king, he was beheaded by the enemy, and Taejo, grieving deeply, made his head with gold and held a grand funeral in his honor.
A Symbolic Resting Place
The Tomb of Sin Sung-gyeom consists of three mounds, a precautionary measure taken by King Taejo to safeguard the golden head from potential theft. The location of the tomb was chosen based on the principles of geomancy, making it one of the most auspicious grave sites in Korea. As you wander through the site, you’ll be surrounded by majestic pine trees and enjoy a breathtaking view of downtown Chuncheon.
Historical Monuments and Designations
Apart from the tomb itself, several other structures add to the historical significance of this site. The tombstone, shrine, and memorial stone were constructed to honor and remember Sin Sung-gyeom’s noble sacrifice. The tomb has been recognized as Gangwon-do Monument No. 21 under the title “Sin jangjeolgong Myoyeok” (Tomb of Sin Sung-gyeom). Additionally, the memorial stone, which bears the story of the Palgongsan Battle and Sin Sung-gyeom’s remarkable performance, has been designated as Gangwon-do’s Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 155.

To reach the Tomb of Sin Sung-gyeom, you can take a convenient train and taxi combination. If you’re departing from Yongsang or Chyeongnyangni Station, hop on an ITX train to Namchuncheon Station.
