Unveiling the Legend
The story of Park Jesang unfolds with a tale of heroism and sacrifice. As a descendant of Park Hyeokgeose, Park Jesang went through immense suffering, enduring torture and eventually being burned to death. His tragic fate came about as a consequence of rescuing two hostages who were brothers of King Nulji, taken captive by the Japanese.
Within the vicinity of Chisanseowon Confucian Academy, you will discover a temple and Mangbuseok, both of which hold significant folklore associated with this story. According to legend, Park Jesang’s wife and two daughters tragically passed away while waiting for his return. It is believed that his wife transformed into Mangbuseok, also known as the faithful wife stone, which can be found in the eastern Chisullyeong Mountain in Manhwa-ri, Dudong-myeon.
As the legend goes, the spirit of Park Jesang’s wife transformed into a bird, seeking solace behind Euneulam, also known as the Bird Hidden Rock. This captivating story encapsulates the enduring love and loyalty of Park Jesang’s family, leaving an indelible mark on the region’s folklore.

Getting to Chisanseowon Confucian Academy
If you are traveling from Seoul, you can easily reach Chisanseowon Confucian Academy by taking an express bus or intercity bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Ulsan Bus Terminal. From Ulsan Intericty Bus Terminal Bus Stop, hop on Bus No. 1713, and alight at Eonyang Bus Stop. From there, take a right at the first four-way intersection and board Bus No. 318 at Eonyang Bus Stop. Finally, after a short walk of approximately 41 meters, you will arrive at the Relics of Park Jesang Bus Stop, where the academy awaits on your left.
