A Glimpse into the Past
The Goryeogung Palace Site witnessed pivotal moments in Korean history. In the 19th year of his reign, King Gojong relocated the capital to Ganghwa due to the island’s natural and strategic advantages. This decision speaks volumes about the historical importance of this location.
During the tumultuous Byeongjahoran, the Chinese invasion of Korea in 1637, the palace fell into the hands of the Qing dynasty of China. Later, the Joseon Dynasty palace building and Ganghwa Yusubu (Ganghwa governor’s office) were established on the site. Tragically, these buildings were destroyed by the French army during the Byeonginyangyo, the French Campaign against Korea. However, thanks to restoration efforts in 1977, visitors today can still witness the Dongheon main office (built in 1638) and the Ibangcheong administration office (built in 1654).
