Discover the Legend
Gungnamji Pond holds a significant place in Korean history as it was created by King Mu from the Baekje dynasty. The king, deeply in love with Princess Seonhwa, constructed this mesmerizing pond as a symbol of their eternal love. The name “Gungnamji” translates to “a pond in the south of the royal palace” and was derived from the records of Samguksagi, the History of the Three Kingdoms.
A Marvel of Engineering
According to historical records, King Mu oversaw the construction of Gungnamji Pond in the 35th year of his reign, back in 634. The pond stretches across a vast area and is connected to a water source through a remarkable 7800-meter long waterway. The king’s vision extended to the aesthetics, as willow trees were planted along the banks, creating a serene and idyllic atmosphere. In the center of the pond, an artificial mound was built, adding to the pond’s charm.
