Hongdo Island is home to approximately 270 kinds of evergreens and 170 types of animals, including some rare species. The government’s dedication to preserving the island’s natural state is evident, as it has been designated as a Natural Preserved Area since 1965 and incorporated into the esteemed Dadohae Marine National Park since 1981. The lush pine and chestnut tree forests serve as a native habitat for the incredibly rare daeyeoppung reed.
While Hongdo Island’s allure is undeniable, it’s important to note that the entire island has been declared a Natural Monument. Therefore, visitors are not permitted to enter areas other than the villages and designated tourist spots. This measure ensures the preservation of the island’s pristine natural environment. As a further testament to this commitment, visitors are kindly requested not to bring back even a stone or a pocket of grass from the island, so we can maintain its untouched beauty.
To reach this idyllic paradise, you can embark on an adventurous journey from Mokpo. From Mokpo Station, take Bus No. 1 and alight at Mokpo Ferry Terminal Bus Stop. From there, hop on a ferry to Hongdo Island, and get ready to be captivated by its stunning landscapes.
