Welcome to Goseokjeong National Tourist Area!
Located in the beautiful Cheorwon region, Goseokjeong Pavilion is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. With its stunning natural surroundings and rich cultural heritage, Goseokjeong offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
- Scenic Beauty: Goseokjeong Pavilion is situated in the midst of the picturesque Hantangang River. The crystal clear waters wind around the magnificent Goseokbawi Rock, a peculiarly shaped rock standing tall in the middle of the river. The sight is truly breathtaking and is considered one of the eight scenic views of Cheorwon.
- Historical Significance: Goseokjeong Pavilion has a history dating back to the Silla Kingdom, during the reign of King Jinpyeong. The two-story tower-style pavilion, spanning an area of about 33 square meters, was a favored retreat for the kings of Silla and Goryeo dynasties. It is also associated with the legendary Im Kkeok-jeong, a leader of a peasant rebellion during the early Joseon dynasty.
- Restoration and Resilience: Despite facing destruction during the Korean War, Goseokjeong Pavilion was restored in 1971 by the resilient community leaders of Cheorwon. It was unfortunately damaged once again by a flood in 1996 but was reconstructed the following year. Today, visitors can explore the natural stone chamber inside Goseokbawi Rock, which was once used by Im Kkeok-jeong as a hiding place.
- Surrounding Attractions: Goseokjeong National Tourist Area offers more than just the pavilion. Just 2 kilometers away, you’ll find Jiktang Waterfall, a stunning cascade that will leave you mesmerized. If you head downstream, you’ll come across the tranquil Sundam Valley, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.
- Year-Round Activities: Goseokjeong is a destination that can be enjoyed throughout the year. The extensive grass square and recreational facilities provide ample space for relaxation and leisure activities. In addition, Goseokjeong serves as the starting point for DMZ tours, offering a unique opportunity to learn about the Korean War and the division of the two Koreas. During winter, visitors can also embark on migratory bird tours and witness the stunning wildlife in the area.
